From Employee to Owner. From Workshop to Legacy.

Karakulia Weavers was founded in 1979 in the coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia, with a simple but powerful mission: to create meaningful employment in the community through the art of carpet weaving.

Moses Helao began his journey on the workshop floor, learning every stitch and technique from the ground up. Through decades of dedication, craftsmanship, and an unshakeable belief in his team, Moses rose from employee to sole proprietor, carrying the legacy of Karakulia into its next chapter.

Today, the workshop hums with the rhythm of over 15 skilled artisans, each one a Namibian carpet craft expert, transforming raw Karakul wool into works of art that find homes across the globe.

How a Masterpiece is Born

Each carpet takes weeks of patient, skilled handwork. There are no shortcuts. Every knot is tied by hand, every colour chosen with care.

Step 01

Sourcing the Wool

Premium Karakul wool is sourced from Namibian farms. This unique breed produces wool prized for its lustre, durability, and rich natural colours.

Step 02

Spinning & Dyeing

Wool is hand-spun and dyed using both natural and custom pigments, creating a palette inspired by the Namibian landscape: desert ochres, Atlantic blues, and savannah greens.

Step 03

Weaving by Hand

Using traditional upright looms, each artisan ties thousands of knots by hand. A single carpet can take weeks or even months to complete, depending on its size and complexity.

Step 04

Finishing & Care

Every completed piece is carefully washed, trimmed, and inspected. The result is a carpet of extraordinary quality that will last a lifetime and grow more beautiful with age.

"A Karakulia carpet is not bought. It is chosen. It finds you, and it becomes part of your story."

Moses Helao, Owner & Master Craftsman
